The Seedling

Well the sun came up as I was sleeping

And the rosebud opened as I dreamed

Of a winter cold as the earth is old

And the silent rivers were all freezing

And in the dead of night I felt you reaching

But my love, you too were only dreaming

Of a lost starling with a broken wing

And a frightened mother softly weeping

And then somebody whispered, you're only sleeping

Sweetheart, open up your eyes

Now I know I'm just dreaming, still I go on believing

All these long-held lies

And the seedling from the soil comes reaching

For the light

And the last dream came as I was yawning

Of a woman beautiful and calming

Took a wounded fawn from the gray wolf's jaws

And the three lay down as day was dawning

Mother, hold them close tonight

Though they flinch and shift and run away

Like the sand through your fingers, these children can't linger

And you can't make them stay

And the seedling from the soil comes reaching

For the day
